"SNELL--Dr. SNELL Dead -- 'New Era'
Dec. 8th -- The many friends of Dr. SNELL in Pacific Grove will
be pained to hear of his death, which occurred in San Francisco Thursday
afternoon. Dr. SNELL, who was a cousin of the renowned Wm. Cullen
BRYANT
-- they were playmates together as boys -- came to Pacific Grove about
5 years ago from San Jose, where he had been a practicing physician for
15 or 20 years. He had been twice married and had 2 sons and a daughter
by the first wife. His daughter, Miss Clara SNELL was married the
day her father died, to J. ELLIOTT, who moved from Monterey to Pacific
Grove a few months ago. She was of course unaware of the fact of her father's
death, the telegram announcing it not arriving until after the marriage
ceremony had been performed. Mrs. SNELL and Mr. & Mrs. ELLIOTT
took the early train for San Francisco yesterday morning to attend the
funeral which will take place in that city." Source: Salinas Weekly

"SNICK--A MAN POISONS HIMSELF - Rats Eat Him and
Are Poisoned in Turn - The Napa 'Reporter' of 18th February tells the following
horrible tale: The remains of one "Dick" or Rich SNICK were discovered
last night in a vacant store-house near Jack's Point. They had been partially
devoured by rats, which had mangled and eaten the flesh from the fingers
and hands, and other parts of the exposed person. It was at first supposed
he had come to his death from an attack of rats, and from the number of
these dead vermin lying about, had made a desperate resistance. But subsequent
examination dispelled this idea. The Coroner's inquest elicited the following
information: The deceased was well known to a number of persons here [Napa],
who considered him a dangerous character, and from his talk thought he
had killed some one; they did not know where he came from, only that he
had stated that at some subsequent period he had been in Redington's drug
store, San Francisco, was much given to drink and had said his name was
Richard SNICK. A paper marked "poison' was found near him and on
analyzing the contents of his stomach, highly inflamed, there is no doubt
he had committed suicide, and eating his poisoned remains had killed the
rats. The jury found thereupon, that the remains discovered were those
of Richard SNICK, 50 years old or more, of dissipated habits; nativity
unknown, and that while laboring under delirium tremens he had taken poison,
which occasioned his death." Source: Stockton Daily Independent,

"SPIVALO--To Contest Father's Will--Adrian W. SPIVALO
began last Friday a contest of the will of his father, the late Caesar
R. SPIVALO, a millman, who died leaving a will bequeathing a $200,000
estate to the other members of the family, but leaving Adrian out. Laura
C. SPIVALO, decedant's widow, has petitioned Judge GRAHAM
of San Francisco for a family allowance of $300 a month. Adrian also opposes
this, saying that $50 a month is the largest allowance which should be
made. The contestant declares that the will is not a legal one since it
omits him from its provisions while remembering his mother, his brother
Raymond and his sister, Laura. The testator died November 12. The estate
