GUIDELINES FOR REQUESTING LOOKUPS

Feel free to request a look-up from the generous volunteers listed in this section.
These wonderful helpers provide their time and effort for free.
However, they can reasonably expect that you reimburse them for costs they incur for such things as photocopying or postage.

Please use the following guidelines when making your request:

• Please DON'T ask the volunteer to do more than they have offered to do.
• Limit your request to one or two items or names.  Be considerate of the volunteer's time.
• Put the words "San Francisco LOOKUP" or in the subject line of your request to insure the message is not overlooked.
• In the first line of the message please put the name of the book or type of record from which you are requesting the lookup.
• If you have a spam filter, either turn it off or add the volunteer's email address to accept your email!
• Be sure to thank the volunteer for their time!

Any source relating to San Francisco history or families is wanted!  Look in the attic, the basement, in the corner of your closet.

 If you only want to do lookups on the third Tuesday of every other month, that's fine!

• Note:  This is an index only, not the actual census record, so there may be some errors or omissions.  Phil can provide you with the ward and page number where a person appears in the actual census record, but he cannot check the actual census for you.  This is a very valuable lookup offer, however, because the City of San Francisco is NOT included in the printed census index for CA in 1870.  Thanks, Phil!

• I will not be able to volunteer too much time, but I find grave searches very resourceful and also intriguing and hope this type of volunteer work will be useful for geneology search.  I'm limited to only 2-3 Mondays per month and I am only able to go to the cemeteries in Colma.  Here is what I'm willing to attempt:
• Locate a grave (even if the cemetery is unknown, but it will only be searched in the Colma cemeteries).  With this kind of case, it would be be helpful if you can provide a full name.  The individual's religion or ethnicity can also be very helpful.   If you want to locate individuals with popular surnames such as Smith, Jones, Anderson, Martinez, Wong, etc., you will need to provide me with a full name (middle name is helpful), approximate date of death, and even religion/ethnicity if known (as this can play a very crucial role). Sometimes even knowing who they may be buried with can prove to be very helpful in this sort of situation.

• Please be advised that each municipal report is over 1000 pages and not

indexed by names of individuals or organizations.  In addition, each years's report is different in its content.  If you have a request for research, please allow plenty of time and try to be as specific as possible.  Otherwise, I may be forced to bypass your request.

• Auditor's Reports (members of police force, age, origin, profession, marital status, etc.; fire department member info as above; Alms house employees;  Industrial and Correction house employees;  Hospital physicians and surgeons; tax levies, including some individuals' delinquent taxes)
