Please enter your information into the various search boxes. It does not matter if they are in lower or uppercase letters. Also, not every box needs to be filled. If a box is filled, the search program will return only results that match what you entered. Thus, no guesses will be returned.
For example, if you enter JOHN MCADAM and a date of death 12 31 1906, it will not find a JOHN MCADAM with a date of death on 12 25 1906. Or, if you enter JOHN FRANK MCADAM, it will NOT find a JOHN HENRY MCADAM. We would recommend that you try entering all your information first and see if anything is found. If not, then start with the First and Last names and keep adding more fields if you get too many results. Also, you might try switching the First and Last names.
You may also use the option of the wildcard character. Thus, if you want to search for any name beginning with LO, enter LO%. For any name ending with A, enter %A. For any name starting with MC and ending with A, enter MC%A. To find a name that includes the phrase DON, enter %DON%. If you want to select all of the 1920s, enter 192%. Please note that the wildcard DOES NOT work on the Last name if you are using an Alternate Index option.
Alternate Indexes: Soundex, Metaphone, Double Metaphone, NYSIIS and TEdex are indexing options to search for the Last name based on the way a name sounds rather than the way it is spelled. Read more here about these options.
