The Philadelphia took 204 passengers. She goes direct to Chagres.

Among the passengers in the Ohio were a theatrical company, consisting of Mr. Charles Thorn, wife and two sons, Mr. Mestayer and wife, Mr. Dinneford and wife, with several others of the theatrical profession, forming a very powerful company. The N. Y. Herald understands that a very fine location has been engaged for the theater, for which Mr. Thorn is to pay a rent of $12,000 per month.

The steamer Philadelphia took away, among others, Col. Allen Campbell and a party of engineers. Col. Campbell has lately been chief engineer of the Harlem Railroad Company, and resigned his office in that company for the purpose of accepting the post of chief engineer of a railroad to be constructed immediately from the port of Calera, on the Pacific side, to Copiapo, in the mining district of Chili, which will be the first railroad in South America. We are informed that as soon as the survey of this road is completed, the construction will be entered upon as soon as possible.

The Tehuantepec Survey

The following is a list of the surveying party which, under the command of Major Barnard, U. S. Engineer Corps, left here yesterday afternoon on the steamship Alabama, Capt. Foster, for the river Coatzacoalcos and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. All told, the party numbers fifty-three persons - a sufficiently large force to conduct the survey of the Isthmus with combined dispatch and accuracy. They go well provided with everything necessary for the accomplishment of their arduous task; and under the able superintendence of that skillful officer, Major Barnard, the results of the expedition cannot fail to be a favorable and as accurate as could be desired. They will be actively attained and as actively seized hold of by the citizens to secure to our city and State, at once, a position to command much of the greater portion of the immense trade to California, and ultimately to the Pacific Islands and the great commercial ports on the Eastern and Southeastern shores of Asia.

The splendid steamship Alabama will secure for herself in this pioneer expedition an enviable reputation. She has long been connected with the commercial history of New Orleans, and her return here from the Isthmus and Vera Cruz will at once place her still higher in the favorable opinion and patronage of the mercantile and traveling community. We consider her departure the most important step towards the establishment of the Tahuantepec Railroad. What so long was a mere airy project has now assumed the substantial appearance of reality, and gives to the community a certain pledge of the intention to carry on the great work to its completion:

General list of the party.-Chief Engineer, Major J. G. Bernard, U.S.A.; Assistant Engineers, J. J. Williams, Geo. T. Dunbar; Hydrographic Assistants, Passed Midshipman W. G.
