D.C. Girl Killed In Dash For Ball
An 11 year-old Daly City girl was killed last week when she chased a ball across busy Skyline Boulevard and was struck by one car and run over by another.
Dead is Margaret Galindo, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cruz Galindo of 685 Skyline Drive.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the girl was playing with three or four other children when the large rubber ball rolled across the southbound lanes of the highway and came to rest in the center of the divider strip.
The girl started to run after the ball, hesitated a moment, and apparently thinking she had time ran on. One car swerved sharply and missed her, but she was struck by a pickup truck driven by William R. Merz of Pacifica. She was then run over by Bradford E. LaMoine, also of Pacifica.
She was death on arrival at Mary’s Help Hospital in Daly City.
Her death pointed out a danger, according to neighbors that exists in that area of Skyline Boulevard. Access to the busy highway is easy because there is no state highway fences to prevent foot traffic for a stretch of approximately 1000 yards.
The Westlake Subdivision Improvement Association discussed the matter at its meeting Monday night and decided to press the city and the State Division of Highways on the matter.
Daly City Mayor Albert Polonsky said the city is already working on the matter. A report has been ordered from the City Manager and correspondence to the state on the matter is expected.
