I sort of did have a dinner with a genuine San Francisco character, no less than Sally Stanford. My wife and I were living in Marin county at the time and one evening we were feeling kinda flush, so we decided to dine at Sausalito's Valhalla restaurant, owned and operated by Sally, of course. After dinner, Madam Stanford came over to our table and introduced herself. She was very interested in my godmother who had been a professional collegue of hers back in the old days. We got to talking and remembering old times. Sally initalled the check and the dinner was on her, except for the tip for the waiter. You wouldn't believe how inexpensive things were back then.
