I was browsing through sfgate.com, and found this article:

Moving? Some People Take the Whole House
Lynn Ermann, New York Times
Wednesday, March 8, 2000

"...routine house move involves digging around the foundation, cutting openings in the foundation walls, inserting steel beams and jacking up the building. Dollies are shoved beneath the house, and then a truck yanks it off its foundation and onto a flatbed trailer. Once at its destination, the house is lowered onto a new foundation."

The other alternative is to dismantle a house and reassemble it at the new location.

Browsing around the internet, I did find one company that will do it:
http://buildingmovers.com/

I'm sure there are more.

P.S. I forgot to mention that an Earthquake Shack/Cottage was moved to Market street last month for the 1906 Commemoration.
