: When was Columbus Ave. built, and why? A map from 1864 does not show Columbus, By 1873 it shows on a city map.

It was built in 1873-1874. Then called Montgomery Ave., later (about 1909) renamed Columbus Ave. It was built to provide a steady mild grade from downtown through North Beach for teams hauling loads and to open up N.B. for more development. It also increased land values in N.B. See Alta, March 19, 1870.
My gr gr grandfather's residence was in the line of the new street so he had it moved to Telegraph Hill were it burned in 1906.
