I don't have any specific facts about how they did it. But, I would guess that real estate transactions printed in the newspapers and real estate circulars may have been used. There were also Block Books available which indicated who owned which tracts of land. Block Books can be seen in the San Francisco Public Library - History Center.

I would think that newspaper articles would have covered how these were reconstructed. There are microfiche indexes available (created by the California State Library I believe). There are sets available for use at the San Francisco Main Library - Newspaper Center.

Local Title Insurance agencies may also be able to give you some insight.
