Does anyone know if some ships were sunk in San Francisco Bay when the 1906 earthquake struck - perhaps as a result of a big wave? I am researching a family who have some oral history which details this event - the sailor concerned was from the UK so it may have been a UK ship. He apparently survived the sinking because he was on shore. He was later ordered to help in the aftermath of the earthquake because he was in uniform. Later, he worked his way across to the East Coast as a singing waiter.

I am trying to establish if there were indeed ships sunk in the Bay and, if so, whether there is a record anywhere of the names and country of origin of those ships. Can anyone help?
