My sister Patsy Lewis and I lived at Mt. St. Joseph's orphanage from about 1936 to 1940 after our Mother and father broke up. I learned to read in the K or 1st Gr. classroom. My sister was to young for the dorms and was alone in the nursery with sweet, Sister Rita.

I was chosen Princess of the Worlds Fair and given some high honors, including "taking" all the girls at the school to see the "Little Princess" at the Orpheum Theater.

It was a publicity stunt for the movie. A group came to St.Joseph's looking for a little girl to fill the bill for an orphan.

Many of the girls were there when their familes were in distress. It was safe place and they knew their girls would be well cared for. Most of us had a parent (or two) who was unable to keep us at home. I missed my mother and father and little sister and brother. But I also felt safe and content at Mt. St Joseph's, except when I had to go by the huge of the bleeding Sacred Heart Picture over the main staircase.
