Janis Joplin Leaves Most Of Estate To Her Family

Rock singer Janis Joplin, who was found dead in a Hollywood apartment on Oct. 4, left the bulk of her estate to her family, according to a will drawn up only three days before she died.

The will, filed yesterday for probate in Marin Superior Court, leaves half of an unestimated amount of property, stocks and income to her parents, Seth David and Dorothy Bonita Joplin of Port Arthur, Texas.

The other half is to be divided between a sister, Laurel Lee Joplin, and brother, Michael Roy Joplin, both of whom also live in Texas.

Miss Joplin also directed that the executor of her estate divide her household furnishing, jewelry, clothing and other personal effects among friends. Her roommate, Lyndall Erb, who lived with her in her Larkspur home, is to receive the main share.

Miss Joplin’s attorney, Robert E. Gordon, of Beverly Hills, today said that speculation which had arisen because of the fact that the singer made the will so shortly before she died was unfounded.

“She made the will at my insistence,” he said, “I practically had to drag her into my office.” He also commented that when he was with Miss Joplin on Oct. 1, “She was bubbling and happy.”

The Los Angeles County Coroner listed the cause of Miss Joplin’s death as an overdose of heroin.

Gordon said he could not estimate the value of the singer’s estate but that it includes the Larkspur house, stocks and income from records and published music.
