James R. Melrose was the son of James W. Melrose and Mary H. Condon. An announcement of their marriage is index in the Call Index, 1877. An announcement of the father’s death appeared in the San Francisco Call, 15 January 1906; he died 14 January and was then reported as 58 years, 10 months and 21 days old [b. 21 February 1847] and a native of Illinois. His wife was already dead, and he was reported as the father of May and James. The family appears in U.S. 1880 [x-Melsone], in San Francisco on the 1300 block of Buchanan [where they also appear in city directories in 1889, 1890, 1901]. A daughter, Mary C. [1, b. ~1879] is present, and the household also includes Sarah Condon, mother-in-law, and Richard Condon, a brother-in-law. The family was not located in U.S. 1901.
There is an announcement of the issuance of a marriage license to Clarence D. Bevier, 35, and Mary C. Melrose, 28 [b. ~1879], appearing in the San Francisco Call, 26 June 1907. The Bevier’s can be located in U.S. 1920, but in U.S. 1930, Clarence D. Bevier is lodging in San Mateo Co., a widower. There is a CADI record for a Mary M. Bevier, 36, d. 7 August 1929, San Mateo Co., spouse’s initials “CD”. Despite the error in age, this is likely James’ sister.
As you are aware, there is also an announcement of the issuance of a marriage license to James R. Melrose, 21, and Katie E. Strubel, 18, both of San Francisco that appeared in the Marin Journal, 15 January 1907. The family appears in U.S. 1910, CA, SF, E.D. 64, Sheet 8B, 161 California. The family consists of James R. [head, 24, b. CA], Katie E. [20, b. CA, pb. MA/IL] and Ruth E. [11/12. b. CA].
There is a WWI Draft Registration [12 September 1918] record for James Robbinson Melrose, b. 12 July 1885. He is working as a farmer at Mulberry, San Benito Co. He reports his nearest relative as Mrs. Mary Bevier, 957 Hayes St., San Francisco. This is almost certainly your James Melrose. That he does not give his young children as his nearest relative is, I think, not very significant, but that he does not give his wife would seem to be.
There is a person indexed as James R. Mebroe in U.S. 1920 in Monterey Co., CA. He is 34, b. CA, and has a wife, Alice [38, b. IL]. Alice Melrose, 43, d. 14 March 1922, Monterey Co., spouse’s initials “JR”. There is also a James Melrose in U.S. 1930 in Los Angeles; he is 44, b. CA, widowed. It is possible that these are records of your James Melrose. There is also a not very informative death record for a James Melrose, b. 15 July 1885, d. 11 May 1946 in Los Angeles Co. It should probably be researched.
Katie E. Strubel is known to have had a brother, Frank. His CADI record is informative: Frank G. Strubel, b. 28 January 1891, CA, mm. Culley, d. 22 November 1963, San Francisco.
There is an announcement if the Call Index of the marriage of George Strubel and Mary Culley, 1888. A death notice for George Strubel appeared in the San Francisco Bulletin, 8 January 1899 [and is transcribed at the SF Genealogy site]. He is reported as the son of Valentine and Catherine Strubel, the brother of Frederick, Frank and Phillip, a native of Boston, and the father of Katie, Frank and Lizzie. As there is no mention of her, it seems likely that George’s wife, Mary [Culley] Strubel had died before 1899.
George’s brother, Fredrick Strubel, appears in U.S. 1900 [x-Free Strubel] in San Francisco, b. MA, September 1867. His household includes his brother, Frank, as well as his nephew, Frank, b. CA, February 1891. George’s two daughters are also listed in U.S. 1900 in San Francisco; both are in the Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum [E.D. 422A], at North S, between 18th and 20th Avenues [the corresponding current street names would be: on Newhall, between Revere and Thomas]. The girls appear on different pages: [1] 1B/line 39 – Catharine Strubel [b. April 1889, CA, pb. Boston/Ireland]; [2] 3B/line 61 – Elizabeth Strubel [b. April 1892, CA, pb. Boston/Ireland].
Elizabeth Strubel was not discovered in later records apart from U.S. 1910 where she is in service in San Francisco. Frank Strubel, however, appears in U.S. 1920 and U.S. 1930. He also registered for the draft in WWI [5 June 1917]. He reported himself b. San Francisco, 28 January 1891, single but with three dependent children, almost certainly his sister’s children:
Ruth E. Melrose – b. May 1909; she appears in the CADI: Ruth Elizabeth Sullivan, b. 25 May 1909, CA, mm. Strubel, fn. Strubel, d. 5 January 1999, San Mateo Co. There was a Daniel Joseph Sullivan, mm. Strubel, b. SF, 29 May 1938.
Margaret Melrose – b. 4. June 1911, SF, mm. Strubel; likely SSDI: Margaret Heglin, b. 4 June 1911, d. 5 May 2007, SF. There was Ronald George Heglin, mm. Strubel, b. 21 August 1937, SF.
Mildred Melrose – b. 4. June 1911, SF, mm. Strubel; nothing about marriage/death discovered.
Viola Melrose – b. 16 March 1913, SF, mm. Strubel; CADI: Viola Melrose, 1, d. 16 May 1914, San Francisco].
The most likely explanation is probably that Katie [Strubel] Melrose died sometime between the birth of her last child [03/1913] and her brother’s WWI registration [06/1917]. There is, however, no CADI record for anyone named Katie, Katherine or Catherine Melrose in the interval 1913-1917.
