Thomas C. Nelson, Marin Civic Leader
Thomas C. Nelson, longtime Marin County attorney and civic leader, died today in a local hospital after a long illness. He was 82.
Nelson was city attorney for Mill Valley for 20 years, resigning in 1961, and until becoming hospitalized, practiced with the San Rafael law firm of Nelson, Boyd, McDonald and Tarrant.
He was born and reared in Markleeville, Alpine County, and then attended the University of California, graduating from Hastings Law School. He was a member of Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity.
During World War I he served as a corporal in the Army.
From 1919 to 1943, Nelson practiced law in San Francisco, before moving his office to Marin.
The family home was in Mill Valley for many years.
Nelson was a member of the Marin, California and American bar associations.
He also was a member of the San Rafael Lions Club, San Rafael Chamber of Commerce and the Marin County Peace Officers Association.
He was a past master of the Mill Valley Lodge of the Masons and past exalted ruler of San Rafael Lodge of the Elks. He also was a past president of the Marin Council of the Boy Scouts of America and past commander of the American Legionís Mill Valley post.
Nelson had made his home in El Cerrito with his son, Walter E. Nelson, for the past four years but continued to be active with his law firm until two weeks ago.
He is also survived by another son, Thomas C. Nelson Jr. of Mill Valley, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were pending today at Russell and Gooch Mortuary.

A Death Notice adds that he was the husband of the late Helen M. Nelson. Family services were private at Russell and Gooch.
