Facing Loss Sight, Ranger Ends His Life
Mill Valley Man, Despondent Because of Ill Health Shoots Himself
Despondent over a malady which was causing him to lose the sight of his eyes, Carl Bachem, 48, a ranger in Muir Woods at Mill Valley, shot himself through the right temple yesterday afternoon at the home of John T. Needham, superintendent of Muir Woods. Death was instantaneous.
Bachem was visiting Needham at his home about four miles from Mill Valley and while Needham was repairing his car close by the house, Bachem shot himself.
A note found later indicated that Bachem was despondent because of continued ill health. He left two checks amounting to $1,250 and $60 in cash to his wife, Mrs. Pauline Bachem. The couple lived at Hillside Avenue, Mill Valley. The body was removed last night to the parlors of Keaton and Dusel in San Rafael.
