Irene Rochelle Katz
Irene Katz passed away unexpectedly April 23, 2002 at her home in Marinwood at the age of 62. A 35-year resident of Marin, Irene was born April 22, 1940 in Seattle, Washington. She graduated from Franklin High School and went on to the University of Washington. In 1960 she married Kenneth Katz and moved to Santa Rosa, California. They later moved to their present home in Marinwood. Irene was very active in Marin County in many ways. She taught preschool for 28 years, first at the Marin Hills Nursery School, and for the last 25 years at Oakview Nursery School, where she was fondly referred to as "Teacher Irene". At the time of her death she was helping to coordinate a 25-year reunion for the nursery school. She will be truly missed by all her present and former students and their parents. In addition to her teaching, she has played an integral role in the operation of the Marinwood Community Center for 22 years. In 1982 she was appointed to the Marinwood Pool Commission and continued to serve until the time of her death. She taught water safety and swim lessons at the pool for several years. For the last 15 years she has worked as the Office Assistant in the office at the Community Center. Her knowledge of the community and the services offered made her an invaluable resource -- much loved and admired by the people she worked with and those whom she helped. She was a fixture in her Marinwood neighborhood, waving at her friends as she ran, rode her bike or pushed her scooter. For several years she helped organize a successful block party on her street. She and her husband traveled extensively all over the world, were avid skiers and loved spending time at the family vacation home on Camano Island, Washington. She will be dearly missed by her husband Kenneth, her son Jeff Katz of San Diego, her daughter Carin Katz of Scotts Valley, her daughter Lisa Snyder of Sacramento, her sister Sandra Cohn of Oakland and her four grandchildren, Jeremy, Skyler, Kaylena and Spencer Katz of San Diego. A Memorial Service to honor and remember Irene will be held Sunday, April 28, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at Congregation Rodef Sholom, 170 North San Pedro Road, San Rafael. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the "Irene Katz Memorial Fund", care of Oakview Nursery School, 70 Skyview Terrace, San Rafael, CA 94903, or in her name to the American Heart Association, or to your favorite charity.
