Elsie A. Varney

Elsie A. Varney, long-time Mill Valley resident, died Saturday at the Fifth Avenue Convalescent Hospital in San Rafael after a lengthy illness. She was 84.

Mrs. Varney was the widow of Antone “Tony” Varney, who founded and operated Varney’s Hardware in Mill Valley for many years. He died in 1961.

Mrs. Varney was born and reared in San Francisco and moved to Mill Valley after her marriage.

She was a member of the Mill Valley Outdoor Art Club and served as president twice of the Park School Parent-Teacher Association. She also initiated the hot lunch program at the school.

She is survived by two daughters, Valerie Dodge of San Anselmo and Antoinette Battles of Concord; one son, George Varney of Sacramento, and four grandchildren. Another son, Charles Varney, died in 1979.

The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Keaton’s Mortuary in San Rafael. Burial will be in Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno.

The family prefers memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
