Swimmer, 19, Drowns In Marin Slough
A 19-year-old San Franciscan drowned yesterday afternoon while attempting to swim across a slough from Limantour Spit and Drake’s Beach, Point Reyes peninsula, sheriff’s deputies reported.
The victim was Rubin Flores of 150 Miramar Avenue who was caught in strong undertow and current which pulled him out from shore and under the waves sometime between 3 and 3:30 p.m.
Deputies said that Flores and Paul Roland, 22, of Fresno, were attempting the swim together, but became separated and Flores went under.
Ron Blandes, also of Fresno, went to their aid, but only able to help Roland, deputies reported.
A Coast Guard helicopter and the Marin County Fire Department’s rescue squad were called in search for Flores body, but the search was called at 5:30 p.m. when fog moved in.
