Mrs. J. B. Rice Dies In Corte Madera Home
Mrs. Ruth Speddy Rice, wife of Joseph B. Rice, founder of the J. B. Rice hardware company of San Rafael and Eureka, died yesterday at her home in Corte Madera after a long illness. She was born in San Francisco 57 years ago.
She spent most of her childhood in Alameda, then married Rice in San Francisco in 1924 when they moved to Elm avenue on Palm Hill, Corte Madera.
Her husband founded his hardware company about 25 years ago, building it into a chain of stores in San Rafael, Vallejo, Napa and Eureka.
He recently sold the retail stores in Vallejo and Napa, and now operated the hardware business in San Rafael and Eureka on a wholesale basis, except for household appliances and floor coverings which are still sold retail.
Mrs. Rice is survived by her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Jacqueline Anderson of Larkspur; a son, Howard Rice of Santa Rosa; three grandchildren, Laura Ruth and David Alexander Anderson, and Amy Elizabeth Rice; a sister, Mrs. Roberta Hubbard of San Francisco, and a brother, Kenneth Speddy of Cupertino.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Keatonís Mortuary, San Rafael, followed by private inurnment.
A Death Notice in the same paper mentions that she was the niece of Mrs. Gertrude Reed, daughter of the late Howard and Sarah Speddy.
