Marinite Is Killed In Viet Action
Army S/Sgt. Gernot Bender of San Anselmo was killed in Vietnam last Tuesday, one month after he left his job as operations sergeant and part-time instructor at the University of San Franciscoís Department of Military Science.
Bender, 34, was assigned to the Fourth Cavalry Squadron, 25th Infantry Division. He was the 26th Marinite to died in action in Vietnam.
Details of his death and the location in Vietnam were not available today.
Born in Brazil of German parentage, Sgt. Bender joined the ROTC staff at the university in February 1967. He was a part-time student, studying at night for his bachelorís degree in history at the university.
Bender enlisted in the Army in 1957 and had served six years in Germany before coming to Marin County to reside at 24 Durham Road, San Anselmo.
He is survived by his wife, Uta; a daughter, Arline, and two sons, Clyde and Kevin. He is also survived by his parents who live in Germany.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
