Dr. Albert Treichler Dies At 83
Long illness has ended in death for Dr. Albert J. Treichler of Kentfield.
The 83-year-old retired Army surgeon died Friday night in Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco.
He had been a Kentfield resident at 45 Laurel Grove avenue since 1938, and was active in civic affairs until a few years ago when his health became too poor.
He is remembered also by many of Marinís youngest generation as a magician. He gave magic shows for charitable organizations, schools and Boy Scout groups.
Magic was but one of several of Dr. Treichlerís hobbies. He also gained recognition as an amateur in photography and in painting in oils and pastels. He played the cello and trombone and spoke several languages fluently.
Dr. Treichler was born in Switzerland. He came to the United States at the age of 16 but returned to Europe for professional training at the University of Rome. He entered private practice of medicine in Springfield, Mass., and in 1917 was commissioned a lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps.
He served at Ft. McKinley in the Philippines and at Tientsin, China, as chief of surgical service in the early Ď20s, then at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver and at Ft. Missoula, Mont. From 1934 to 1940 he was surgeon of the harbor defense organization of San Francisco.
He retired in 1940 as a lieutenant colonel but was recalled to active duty 11 months later, in charge of military training of medical selectees at Ft. Barry. His last assignment before he again retired was as executive officer at Ft. Baker.
Dr. Treichler is survived by two daughters and a son: Mrs. Joseph R. Gunn Jr. of Kentfield, Mrs. Wesley K. Simes of Springfield, Mass., and Paul F. Treichler of Yellow Springs, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Thomas DePamphilis of Coral Gables, Fla.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Private inurnment will be in Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, directed by Russell and Gooch of Mill Valley.
