Sausalito dredge mechanic
Herman Kaiman, a former dredge mechanic in Sausalito, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1993, in Sebastopol after a brief illness. He was 83.
Mr. Kaiman was born in New York and spent most of his youth in Massachusetts before moving to Astoria, Ore., to work as a commercial fisherman.
He retired from the Army Corps of Engineers in 1978 after 25 years of service as a diesel mechanic on the channel dredge the Biddle, harbored in Sausalito. On board, he made the circuit from Hawaii to San Francisco to Astoria and back again.
For the past three years he was a resident at the Chanate retirement community in Santa Rosa. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Lions Club.
Mr. Kaiman is survived by two stepsons, Kenneth Harris and James Harris, both of Novato; a stepdaughter, Judith Schneider of Santa Rosa; and many step-grandchildren.
His wife, Adelene Kaiman of Sausalito, died earlier.
A small family service is planned. Arrangements have been made by the Neptune Society.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Jeffrey Harris Scholarship Fund, San Marin High School, Novato.
