WALTER F. GOLDSMITH
Walter F. Goldsmith, a 24-year resident of Novato, died Monday in a local hospital after a short illness. He was 71.
He was the owner of Walt Goldsmith Saddlery which has done business in Novato for 20 years. He had a national reputation for his work on saddles for cow punchers, show people, trail riders, and ropers.
Before moving his business to Novato, he operated a shop in San Francisco and worked for other saddle companies in San Francisco and in Utah.
A native of Oklahoma, he grew up in Vallejo, Stockton, and Colorado where he had a homestead, and worked cowpuncher.
Survivors include a daughter, Jodie Hankel of Novato; and two stepsons, Roger and Cole Hampridge, both of Novato.
A memorial service will be held for him at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Redwood Chapel Funeral Home in Novato. Inurnment will be at the Bahia Valley Memorial Park in Novato.
The family prefers that memorial contributions in his name be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Children’s Hospital in San Francisco.
