Steele, 86, died Friday in a Novato hospital.

He was born in Marshall and was a dairyman in West Marin. In 1951, he moved to Novato and worked as a carpenter at Hamilton Air Force Base. He was a veteran of World War I.

He was a member of Vitruvius Lodge No. 145 Free and Accepted Masons for 65 years and the Petaluma post of the American Legion for 50 years. He was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church in Tomales.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine; two sons, David Steele of Stockton and William Steele of Napa; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Gallagher of Windsor; two stepsons, Sherman Steele of Novato and Wallace Steele of Danville; a sister, Edith Siemsen of Petaluma; and 10 grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

A Masonic funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Bahia Valley Memorial Park in Novato, where he will be buried.

The family prefers contributions to Masonic homes or a favorite charity.
