My Grandfather was born in 1871 and our combined family knowledge says that his last name was Kaiser but we have no firm idea of the spelling.

I found him in the 1880 census, already living with his adoptive family. With such a small amount of info, are there any records which may help me find his biological family. Do adoption records still exist? What info might be in those records, if they do exist?
