The Roman Catholic Archives in Menlo Park have all the church records:

You are correct that the 1906 disaster destroyed the pre-1906 marriage city records.

A last resort may be to try the newspapers. They often listed these types of events and many are now online. I would recommend looking at San Francisco, the towns they came from, and Sacramento.

: Dear Ron

: I'm searching for the Marriage Certificate/Registration of my gggrandfather James Smith and Johanna Regan who married in May 1850 at the Mission Dolores Church in San Francisco by Father Anthony Anglais. I tried the County Recorder Office who then passed me onto the Roman Catholic Archivist in California, but i'm afraid this person found no record of the marriage. Also no record of a Father Anthony Anglais. Are you able to tell me where i go next? Is it possible all records of marriages at this time could have been destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Here's hoping. Thankx
